Shrink fitting

It is used especially for fitting cylindrical parts such as bolts, shafts and bushings. The procedure is based on the basic law of physics that metals shrink when they are cold and expand when they are hot. This principle is used in the shrink-fitting process to join machine parts with friction locking.

The fit of the workpieces to be joined is determined by the material and the excess size of the compression member, as is the torque that the two parts can transmit following shrink fitting. In practice, the shaft (compression member) is cooled in a liquid nitrogen bath. It must be completely covered in nitrogen during the cooling phase. The cooling process, which starts with vigorously boiling nitrogen, ends when the temperatures of the shaft and the nitrogen equalise. After approx. 130 min., the shaft has reached its smallest possible diameter and can then be inserted into the hole in the roller. When the components warm up, the press fit required is achieved.

Advantages of shrink fitting at a glance

  • No alteration of structure, i.e., no warping as with heat expansion
  • No deformation of the components as with heat expansion
  • Rapid deployment when a repair is needed
  • Extremely strong joints
  • Low investment and economical procedure

Cryotechnology systems

Cryotechnology systems are used in the laboratory, research, medicine and biology. They are used to store biogenic material. This includes stem cells, bone marrow, erythrocyte concentrations, homografts, skin, blood reserves, cell cultures, egg cells, etc., which all have to be stored under special conditions. The above freezers (figure 2) are filled with liquid nitrogen and have a control system that keeps the content in an adjustable temperature range of +40 °C to -180 °C.
